Recorded At The Village: Lizz Wright’s Album “Freedom & Surrender”

Updated: May 31, 2020

After a 5 year break, and a departure from her former label, Lizz Wright is about to make her Concord Records debut when “Freedom & Surrender” is released on September 4th. This will be Wright’s fifth studio album, and we’re proud to say that it was recorded here at The Village, produced by Grammy Award winning producer, Larry Klein.

With the support of an all-star band (drummer Vinnie Colaiuta, bassist Dan Lutz, percussionist Peter Korpela, guitarists Dean Parks and Jesse Harris, and keyboardists Pete Kuzma, Kenny Banks and Billy Childs), they tracked 16 songs in 6 days – 13 of which constitute the album. The songs are all gorgeous pieces of writing that expose Wright’s raw emotions, written with such seasoned co-writers as Toshi Reagon, Jesse Harris, Larry Klein and David Batteau.

For an album that’s not even out yet, “Freedom & Surrender” has been receiving rave reviews. NPR, The Wall Street Journal and Billboard are among countless others who are singing Wright’s (and Klein’s) praises. You can go ahead and add The Village to that list as well. We suggest you check out her version of Nick Drake’s “River Man” – It’ll give you chills that will last until the album drops this Friday. Then, be prepared to get chills all over again.
