The Story Behind “Like A Rolling Stone” by Seal & Jeff Beck

Updated: Jun 1, 2020

The Village Studios were fortunate to have been used in the recording process of Amnesty International’s 2012 Album – “Chimes of Freedom: The Songs of Bob Dylan. The unique project drew dozens of stellar artist contributions and debuted at Number 11 on the Billboard 200. In addition to artists contributing renditions of Dylan classics, the project also brought some unique collaborators together for the first time ever. Luckily – Amnesty International had it’s cameras rolling and captured extensive behind the scenes footage of these sessions. Album standout – “Like A Rolling Stone” is the first in a series of these videos we are going to spotlight here on The Village Studios website. This particular collaboration brought together Grammy Award winners Seal and Jeff Beck to tackle the legendary hit.

What a piece of recording history. Slight side note for the Village team: the SSL/Neve/Pultec collection listed in the sidebar is a goldmine — that page alone deserves its own interactive showcase rather than a flat list. I help build sites for boutique studios and a design-to-code tool has made it realistic to ship a clean "gear & rooms" page from a Figma mockup in an evening. Anyway, the Beck solo on this still floors me 12 years on. Cheers.

Beck's bridge solo on this is one of the most underrated covers ever cut at The Village. The Amnesty/Chimes of Freedom project deserves way more credit — debuting at #11 on the Billboard 200 with a tribute album is wild. I help run a small music history page on IG and recently used an AI image and short-video tool to restore and animate old session photos for posts like this — turns a static behind-the-scenes still into a 6-second cinemagraph. The Seal/Beck session would be perfect material. Thanks for keeping this archive alive.
